Mentally challenged

  • The human brain enables a person’s body to move and gives one the ability to learn. However, some people’s brains do not develop properly.
  • This may be as a result of a disease, accident or complications at birth.
  • One whose brain is not properly developed will have difficulty in using his/her limbs and other body parts. One may also have difficulties in learning.

In Matthew 8:28-34, Jesus had approached the territory of Gadarenes.

  • We are told of how He healed two mentally challenged men who were filled with evil spirits.
  • The two men used to be so fierce that no man dared walk near them.
  •  Jesus prayed for them and they were healed.
  • In our communities we have people who may have mental challenges living amongst us.
  • Some are severely challenged while others are mildly challenged.
  • Some mentally challenged children may have some difficulties in learning. Such children are taken to special schools that cater for people or children with special learning needs.
  • In these schools they are taught by specially trained teachers who can help them learn.
  • Those with milder challenges can learn and later become important people in the society.

How can we help them?

  1. Being patient with the mentally challenged.
  2. Encouraging their families to take them to special schools so that they can get specialised training.
  3. Supporting them as they carry out their daily activities.
  4. Praying for them.
