Concepts of God
Concepts of God in the traditional African society and in Christianity
- In the traditional African society, God was given different attributes. Like in Christianity, the traditional African heritage acknowledged that God exists and God is a living force.
- In Christianity God is said to be all-powerful. He created humankind; He also created the world and all that is in it. In the same way, Africans believe that He is powerful. He brings rain, thunder and lightning.
- In both, God is believed to be merciful and kind. His mercies are felt when He delivers humankind in times of illness, anxiety, danger or trial.
- God does not directly cause calamities and misfortunes. It is believed that evil spirits, the devil, magic or witchcraft cause these. Africans believed that calamities such as floods, locust invasions and droughts were manifestation of God’s anger. This would cause them to offer sacrifices to appeal to His
- mercy.
- God is a comforter; He comforts those who are in sorrow.
- He is a just God. He is impartial in His judgment.
- God is good. He gives His people rich harvests and large herds of animals, which lead to a healthy population.
- God is holy. During sacrifices seeking forgiveness, Africans used to sacrifice the best animals. Priests who officiated the sacrifices were supposed to keep their bodies clean. In Christianity, Jesus was the best and holiest sacrifice for our sins.
